FEMININE LIVING TRADITIONS FOR YOUR... HOME...HEARTH...AND HEART JUNE 2014

JUNE musings...

My daughter Andrea was born this month...many June moons ago...but the joy I felt when I first saw and held her...seems like just a few moments ago...to me.

Her birth brought such positive change for me...and such a gift and blessing...and I cherish that season of my life as a woman and as her mom.

Memories like that stay with a woman and a new mom ...no matter how many years ago that you birthed your child...or how old the child is. Sometimes at the strangest times...my thoughts turn fondly when my daughters were born...or I capture a glimpse of them when they were babies or very small children. Those are the very best memories for me...always...and my daughters are my most priceless and worthy accomplishments of my life.

It is so true the more years you walk the earth journey...the more you ponder the time you have lived...and experienced...and also begin to seriously value your time and how you spend it.On days when I know my daughter Andrea will call me on Skype...and I can talk and see her beautiful face and my little grandson...who both live many... many miles away... that event...being with them...via Skype becomes and is the most important priority for me...nothing else I have planned or on my do to list that day...matters.

My garden now is my time piece... the light or shadows of the ever present Sun...my clock. Being in nature...my feet touching the Earth...breathing in the greens...the colors of my flowers...the big oak tree right smack in the middle of the backyard... is my gate keeper...of time.

My garden shows me how and when to be hopeful of new beginnings in the gentle Spring cycle...and when my garden grows quickly and unstoppable...it is time for me too to get moving on projects and grow my soul more. The slow but steady release of leaves...the brown edges of my rose bushes...are tell tale signs of the Fall season... approaching...so I too reflect on what I need to "let go" of...which as I age...seems to be more with each passing year. The Winter cycle is my favorite season ...all living things in nature have seemed to stop...to retreat and nest within. I retreat as well...into my peaceful home...to create quiet space and solitude for myself... so I can ponder the year...of lessons learned...healing I still need to begin...and to renew my spirit.

My journey as a woman...has gifted me with seasons...each season or cycle... bringing me the joys and sorrows that life brings to any woman. With each season I have had lessons...and turns in the road...that I did not ask for...or even want...but somehow made me a better person...and woman.

No time has been wasted...for each season...each trial...and setback...has helped me grow my soul...and opened my heart more. To the wonder and joy of life...and my place in it.

I am in a good season...right now...a blessed time...in my life...and I feel such gratitude for all the many blessings I have.

I am still growing and learning...and the lesson of patience is still an ongoing struggle for me.But when I feel frustrated...because " it hasn't happened yet"... I go outside and gaze at my garden...in particular my tomato plants...full of tiny green tomatoes...yearning to grow into full maturity...which they will  someday. When I am reminded of this simple truth... in my garden...I know in my heart...that being patient...having faith...and staying in integrity with myself...the best of times...are still to come.

May you be blessed this month,
Victoria

EARTH PRAYERS

Within the circles of our lives
we dance the circles of the years,
the circles of the seasons
within the circles of the years,
the cycles of the moon
within the circles of the seasons,
the circles of our reasons
within the cycles of the moon.

Again,again we come and go,
changed,changing. Hands.
join, unjoin in love and fear,
grief and joy.The circles turn,
each giving into each, into all.
Only music keeps us here,

each by all the others held.
In the hold of hands and eyes
we turn in pairs, that joining
joining each to all again.

And then we turn aside, alone,
out of the sunlight gone

into the darker circles of return.

WEDDINGS IN JUNE

Did you know...some classical scholars believe that the month of June is actually named after Juno...the Roman goddess of marriage.

The Greek civilization created the tradition of placing wedding rings on the third finger of the left hand...because the ancient Greeks believed a vein in this finger ran directly to the heart.

NATURAL BEE STING MEDICINE

Bee's naturally will not harm you...unless they feel threatened or disturbed...but sometimes a bee sting does happen...especially to those who garden...spend time in nature. Below is a natural way to treat your bee sting...but if you have an allergy to bee sting...PLEASE USE YOUR PRESCRIBED MEDICINE.

If you get stung by a bee..remove the stinger with clean tweezers. Apply a paste of baking soda and cold water. A mixture of parsley juice and honey will also help to ease the irritation...just crush the parsley leaves and stems to release the juice.

Also a cold...wet tea bag makes a good poultice for bites and stings.Tea contains tannic acid...which helps to reduce swelling.

FEMININE LIVING TRADITIONS...

...FOR YOUR HOME

Clear out furniture and accessories from your home this June...that just add clutter...or are so worn and torn...they make the room they are in look shabby and  worn. Take stock of what you want to keep...in each room... and then see where you can place a furniture item...picture...rug or accessory ...in one room and place it in another...rearranging in a different way. You will be so pleased and amazed how good... items in one room in your home...looks in another room as well. Things is such a practical and wonderful way to redecorate your whole house...recycling at its finest...and no expense for you!!!

Switch out all your light bulbs for more energy efficient lighting.

Start using your best china and special occasion items...everyday...it makes no sense to use these lovely items for company only...you and your family are worthy of using them everyday.

...FOR YOUR HEARTH

Be sure to eat seasonal fruit and buy fruit from local farmers...keeping prosperity in your community...as well as your food cost ...and you will also be helping the environment when you do not support air transportation or costly trucking from food that is transported out of your area.

I am easily swayed to get out my fork or spoon for anything made with fruit...or a recipe that calls for an ingredient of organic... culinary lavender. Below is a simply wonderful recipe that uses both...enjoy!

PEACH CRISP WITH LAVENDER
Serves 8

6 cups sliced ripe peaces
1 tablespoon lemon juice
about 1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon and 2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 scant teaspoon dried organic...culinary lavender
1 cup unbleached flour
1 cup packed light brown sugar
12 tablespoons unsalted butter...cut into pieces
1/8 teaspoon salt
few grinds of fresh ground nutmeg

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and butter a 2-1/2 quart baking dish. Combine the peaches...lemon juice...sugar...cornstarch...and lavender flowers in a bowl and toss well. If the peaches are tart add a little more sugar.Transfer the peach mixture to the baking dish and spread evenly.

Combine the flour...brown sugar...salt...and nutmeg in a bowl and stir to blend.Cut the butter into the crisp ingredients with a pastry blender until just blended.Spread the mixture over the fruit and bake in preheated oven for about 30 minutes...until the crisp is golden brown and the peaches are bubbling. Serve warm or at room temperature. This treat is great topped with vanilla ice cream too if you wish.

*** You can order organic culinary lavender from www.mountainroseherbs.com or your local organic food store should have it available.

WHOLE NUTMEG
You will never purchase ground nutmeg again once you purchase and cook with whole nutmeg... found in bottles at your food store. The taste is unbeatable when you grind it yourself...on those little tiny graters made just for this use...plus it is so easy to grate nutmeg.

I think it also looks so pretty to place whole nutmeg out on your kitchen counter...in a pretty recycled bottle or jar for all to see.

...FOR YOUR HEART

Run through the sprinkler with your children this month...and connect with your own inner child...as well as spending some quality and good old-fashioned fun time with your children.

Have reading night with your family or for yourself at least once every two weeks. This means no television...cell phones or video games. Everyone read their own books...or a family favorite to read out loud... being sure to give everyone a turn at being the chosen reader.

FEMININE LIVING TRADITIONS FOR YOUR... HOME...HEARTH... AND HEART MAY 2014

MAY musings...

As I gaze out my kitchen window...into my backyard...I see life and beauty in every nook and corner. The big oak tree my husband planted when we bought this house 15 years ago... is huge now... so strong and beautiful it is... always faithful standing guard in our backyard. A few years ago... a honeysuckle vine found it's way into the branches... and taken root... amongst the leaves... and the honeysuckles fragrance perfumes the air... smelling like an exotic island paradise with each breath I take... when I venture into my yard.

My white roses dance daintily in the breeze... making me smile each time I gaze at them. I planted them myself... nurturing them each long... hot summer here in Texas... including sending them loving energy...and talking to them too... and they have survived... beautifully.

Squirrels dance and romp... under the oak tree...and climb the back fence... faster than I can blink my eyes...and give me constant chuckles... for they are natural clowns. I leave them food each day... unsalted sunflower seeds and nuts... and they stuff their cheeks with them...looking like they could pop...they are so full of the food I leave them.

My herbs... I grow... bring me the greatest pleasure. To me they are priceless Earth jewels...ready to pluck and pick for medicine... culinary use...and healing baths. Or to place in small glass vases...to decorate my home with.

I cannot help but feel a little sad for people who do not believe in a Higher Power... or a God... when I look out at my garden... or pulling weeds...or just sitting outside listening to the quiet sound nature makes. Something amazing...and all powerful and all loving created this immense beauty and wonder. It certainly wasn't humans... it was and has to be something MORE...something beautifully... incredibly... WONDERFUL.

But that's just my belief... in my heart...that I hold close. I do not judge anyone for what they think or feel... it is not my job...or my responsibility... to make others believe in a Higher Power...or have faith... like I do.

I just know... that the Earth is beyond lovely... and a miracle... for me...for you...and for everyone to honor and take care of... because the truth is...the Earth is home. And worthy of nurturing...and being mindful of. No matter what you believe or don't believe created all this wonder...and life sustaining place called Earth.

This month of May... the month we honor Mother's Day...stop for a minute... and become more aware how much Mother Earth... gives you...and your loved ones each day. It is amazing when you stop and ponder... just how MUCH you receive each day from the Earth... that keeps you and those you care about...alive.

Start giving back... and nurture Earth. Do your best to cut back... stop doing...and all together cut out things and products that are harmful to the air...water...land... people and all other living creatures.

Care for the Earth...as you would your own children or family pets... beginning today... and by doing so...you will be making a difference in the world...for today...tomorrow...and for future generations.

Blessings,
Victoria

Place the mint and sugar on a cutting board and chop finely.Put in a saucepan and add the boiling water.Stir until the sugar has dissolved.Stir in vinegar to taste.

Take long walks...by yourself...and just take in the beauty of nature.

Next time you see an elderly person with shopping bags... offer to put their bags in their car for them.

Unplug from your electronics for a day... and read...garden...or make a handcrafted item instead.

APRIL 20th 2014

TRADITIONS OF EARTH DAY musings...

This Earth Day gather your family together and have an Earth Day circle... talking and sharing about the need of caring for our beautiful planet. Because the truth is...if you take care of the Earth and her resources...you are also taking care of yourself...and future generations.

After you and your family share your thoughts on taking care of the planet and your concerns about pollution etc. ask each family member to make a promise to themselves...and to the Earth...about one thing they can do each day to care for the environment...and have them write that down on a piece of paper you have provided.

Make each one... responsible for their written promise and hold them accountable... including yourself.

After you have your Earth circle... take the family for a walk around your neighborhood... and pick up any trash you might find... and take any items that could be recycled... and place in your recycling bins.

Earth Day is a perfect day to look into using natural organic products to clean and disinfect your home. Do your research... on essential oils and herbs... to clean with and for use of pest control inside and outside of your home...including pet areas. You will be amazed how easy...affordable and simple it is to make your own cleaning products... once you have the basic ingredients and supplies.

Natural...organic fertilizers are are easily available now...so please start using them on your lawns and flower beds instead of harmful...toxic chemicals...that are polluting our water systems and the land.

And of course it goes without saying to monitor how much gas you consume by constantly running errands and driving unnecessarily. Do all your errands in one area...in one driving time...and resist the urge to drive without it having to be a necessary trip in your car.

Make or purchase handcrafted gifts for your family and friends... instead of buying all those cute...cheap products made in China...that end up in landfills.

Make a enlightened decision to STOP using paper plates ...plastic cups and plastic silverware. It is just wrong to use these...use your own china or at least use recycled... green picnic ware please.

Only buy local...fresh and organic food...in season. Think before you buy those peaches grown and shipped from Chile etc.

If you want to redecorate your home...buy antique...flea or vintage stores...use Earth friendly paint...and put houseplants throughout your home...to balance out toxins and have better air quality in your home.

Respect yourself...others...and all living things...and practice mindful living.

Love and happy Earth Day,
Victoria

APRIL 14th

THE TRADITIONS of  HONEY musings...

Honey is thought to be one of the oldest foods found on the planet... and will not ever spoil... which to me means it is a near perfect natural food... besides being ever so good to eat... as well as good for you too.

Besides being a great food source... it is also great for other uses around the house...including using for minor medicinal uses...and personal care.

Be sure to find and use local honey...to be sure to get pure honey...as some honey that is sold...is filtered ... which means all those good nutrients are gone...and fruit or corn fructose syrup might be added. So be sure to read the label.... before buying anything that is not pure honey.

Give bees a good home in your yards...and help bee colonies bounce back... from the recent decline of the last few years... by planting bee attracting plants in your yards. Lavender... thyme...mint...borage...bee balm... honeysuckle...and flowering bushes...are all good choices to attract these sweet creatures.

HONEY MASK

Oh my... who knew the wonders of using honey as a face mask... here is how you do it. Just pour about 2 tablespoons honey into a small glass bowl...and then gently dab the honey all over your face. Allow the honey to stay on your face about 15 minutes...and then using a clean...wet washcloth...that you have run warm water over...gently wipe off the honey. Rinse off with warm water...followed by a cold rinse.
That's it! Your skin will be so soft... and the honey will also pull out toxins from your skin.

BLEMISH POWER

If you have a pimple... just tab a bit of honey on it... and the honey will pull out the pimple. Now that is sweet!

HONEY HAIR SHINER

For a beautiful... shine to your  hair... just combine 1 teaspoon honey to 4 cups warm water... and then pour over your hair... and DO NOT RINSE OUT.

HONEY BATH

For a soothing and healing bath... try adding 1 tablespoon honey... combined with 10 drops lavender essential oil...into your bath water...and then soak in calming bliss for at least 30 minutes.

Bee happy
Victoria

HONEY BURN BALM

Because honey has anti-inflammatory properties... pure honey can help heal minor burns. If you or someone you care about gets a burn...just place a cold compress on the area...run cold water over the burn...gently dry off...apply a coat of honey.. then cover with gauze. Apply fresh honey daily...until healed.

FEMININE LIVING TRADITIONS FOR YOUR... HOME...HEARTH... AND HEART APRIL 2014

April musings...

It is always with deepest pleasure that I welcome April... as my wonderful daughter Aurora was born this month...in the wee hours of the morning.

I gave birth to her at home... in my bathroom actually... with the help of my mid-wife...my husband and my older daughter. I didn't choose this natural way of bringing forth new life into the world... because I had to... but because I wanted to... and because my soul asked me to do this. I know this might sound odd to you... but a soul does speak to a person... if you silent yourself to listen.

The month of April is a month of rebirth... and awakening to something bigger than yourself...that you have to still yourself to "listen" to.. for your guidance... direction...knowledge and wisdom... that only your soul...your heart...and the voice of The Higher Power... gently whispers to you.

That are your answers... for what you are seeking.

It seems to me... the more I seek... a meaningful life...a life of authenticity... that resonates with my inner core... the more I have come to understand that judging myself and others... is so wrong... if there is such a thing. Everyone seems to point fingers...or poke at... anything or anyone that doesn't fit into their way of doing things... or what they WANT.

I must admit... to be honest here... I do this too... but I have come to realize... it is because I am insecure in that moment... or fearful... instead of being connected to my heart.

As I move into my sixth decade here on this beautiful earth... I crave more and more... a peaceful life... harmony and a sense of meaning in my daily life. I want to strive to be "me" in the highest possible way... for myself... and to that whisper... that voice... that to me is the Creator of all things.

I am reminded each moment... to take that part of me... that trusted so deeply in my ability to birth my daughter without even an aspirin to dull the pain of childbirth... in my own bathroom ... in present time. To focus my energy on deeply trusting and having a faith that I am guided each living... breathing second... by a force... nudging me...forward... to what is right for me...and what is best for me.

I also understand... that not everyone will accept my choices...or support them...and although it would be great if they did... I do not expect it... or need approval from anyone...only my own.

Truth is...my inner voice... never fails me.

May this lovely month of April... be the perfect days and beautiful evenings... that you begin your journey of becoming still... of silent spaces to listen to your own voice... and reclaiming self- trust and growing your faith ... in something bigger than yourself...in whatever understanding that means to you.

You are stronger than you believe you are... more powerful...and so much more deserving... and you will find that knowledge when you still your mind and stand in silence.... and "listen" to the truth of your soul. Do not allow other people who judge you... or question what is right for you...keep you from your inner knowing... or your own answers for what you need or want to do. It is your life... honor that... and stand tall.

Work with the supportive energy and teachings of this month... to reclaim parts of you lost...hidden or just plain denied by you... and go within to seek your own truth...and rebirth your life.

Be the best you... on your own terms...guided by your own inner light... and re-create your life...from the "inside"  out. Not because you have to... but because you want to.

Just listen.

Blessings to you,
Victoria

Make your favorite Lemonade recipe...adding the steeped rosemary water... a bit at a time.Serve with fresh lemon slices and small sprigs of fresh rosemary. Any leftover rosemary water can be stored in fridge for a few days. This rosemary water is strong so add to taste only.

ROSEMARY SPRINKLED FRUIT

The next time you want a real treat...or an easy dessert...just place fresh organic fruit into a bowl...that you have already cut or sliced and sprinkle just a bit of finely chopped organic rosemary on top... and serve. So very good...great as a healthy snack or as a company dessert too.
